It's an historical novel about Hawaiians in North America during the 1800s.
The story follows a young man from Lahaina who washes ashore from a shipwreck in California. He becomes a fugitive and is launched on adventures up and down the coast during Indian Wars, the Gold Rush and the takeover of the Northwest by Europeans and Americans.
